Former Governor of Abia State and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Orji Kalu has called on the political class to uphold the tenets of democracy for the sake of building a prosperous Nigeria.
According to Kalu, the will of the people must prevail at all times for Nigeria to take its rightful position in the comity of nations.
In a statement sent to IGBERE TV, issued in commemoration of Nigeria’s 58th independence anniversary and signed by his Special Adviser, Kunle Oyewumi, Kalu faulted perpertrators of hate campaign in the country, stressing that national interest should be placed above selfish ambitions.
He said, “as we mark Nigeria’s 58th independence anniversary, it is important to reflect on the past for the sake of rebuilding the nation.
” We need to understudy and implement programmes and policies of Nigeria’s founding fathers.
“Leadership position should be seen a clarion call to service and not an opportunity for self-aggrandizement.
“Nigeria is a blessed country in all ramifications. The diverse nature of the country is indeed a plus.
“The people must resist attempts by selfish politicians to cause disunity among ethnic groups in the country.
“We must continue to live in peace and harmony.
“Nigeria has come to stay as a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country and no amount of unpatriotic acts can change that reality.
“Both the governed and the government must play their patriotic roles in order to build a decent society”.
The former governor, while wishing Nigerians a rewarding celebration, urged governments at all levels to live up to expectations.
