Ebola: FG Strengthens Surveillance, Activates Airport Screening - Health

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) says it has activated preventive measures across all international airports in response to the Ebola virus outbreak reported in parts of Central Africa.

FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, said the agency is working in close coordination with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Port Health Services, and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen surveillance and containment efforts at entry points.

“Passengers are being screened for symptoms associated with Ebola, and any suspected case will be promptly isolated and subjected to secondary health checks in line with established national and international health protocols,” Agbebire said.

He added that the authority has intensified passenger monitoring, particularly for travellers arriving from high-risk regions, and reinforced emergency response procedures across airports.

FAAN also noted that staff sensitisation has been increased to improve early detection and response capacity, while coordination with health agencies has been strengthened to ensure rapid intervention where necessary.

The agency assured the public that there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola in Nigeria, stressing that the country remains on heightened alert as part of its preventive public health strategy.

“While there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola in Nigeria, FAAN remains vigilant and fully committed to safeguarding public health and maintaining safe airport operations,” Agbebire said.

Passengers have been urged to remain calm, comply with screening procedures, and promptly report any symptoms to health officials.

The development comes as several African countries intensify containment efforts following renewed Ebola outbreaks linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain, prompting regional travel advisories and increased global monitoring.
