Vatican Announces When Election For New Pope Will Begin

The election of a new Pope for the Roman Catholic Community has been scheduled to take place on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, the Vatican has said.

In a short statement released on Monday, April 28, the Vatican said the Conclave will begin the process for the election of a new Pope in line with the tenets of the Catholic church.

The Papal Conclave is the assembly of cardinals who come together to elect a new Pope following the death or resignation of the previous Catholic Pontiff.

The process – which dates back to the early church – is usually via a strict secluded system to which they submit for the election.

This particular election process comes days after the burial of the late Pope Francis who died after surviving a month-long ailment at the age of 88.

In its statement, the Vatican said all the cardinals will be present in Rome to decide at the fifth General Congregation.

The statement said, “The conclave to elect a new Pope will begin on May 7 according to the Holy See Press Office.

“The Cardinals present in Rome made the decision on Monday at their fifth General Congregation.

“The conclave will take place in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel, which remain closed to visitors during those days,” the statement noted.
