Policeman Accused Of Killing Kolade Johnson Remanded In Prison

An Ikeja High Court has remanded a dismissed police inspector, Olalekan Ogunyemi, at the Ikoyi Prisons following his arraignment for the alleged murder of Kolade Johnson at a viewing centre in Lagos.

The 45-year-old suspect pleaded not guilty on his arraignment on Tuesday to a charge of murder.

Following his plea, Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution, Yhaqub Oshoala, requested that the court remands Mr Ogunyemi at the Ikoyi Prison where he has been since his arrest before trial begins.

Justice A. J Coker adjourned till January 15, 2020, for trial and asked the prosecution team to bring their witnesses to court.

Ogunyemi, who was attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit of Lagos State Police Command, allegedly shot dead Johnson, 36, on March 31 during a raid around a football viewing centre at Onipetesi area of Lagos.

Mr Oshoala said the alleged offence contravenes Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.The dismissed police inspector faces death sentence if convicted.
