A Nigerian woman, Uzoma Asagwara, has been elected into the Manitoba Legislative Assembly in Canada.
The psychiatric nurse, who is also a community activist, was announced as the winner of Manitoba’s Union Station riding on Tuesday. She becomes the first black woman in the legislature.
Asagwara is also one of three black people to have been elected into the 150-year parliament.
On winning the election, she told CTV: “This is a historic moment for our team and our communities.”
She added that it is “sign that folks are really making sure that our elected officials reflect the communities they serve.”
Asagwara had played for the Canadian National Basketball team.
