UNILORIN Reacts To Reports Claiming It Strips Pharmacy Graduands

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has denied reports that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sulyman Abdulkareem, stripped graduands of their gowns last Friday.

Reports had said over the weekend that Prof Abdulkareem ordered the cancellation of a 32-man list of graduating students earlier issued at the 4th Induction/Oath Taking Ceremony organised by the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in conjunction with the Pharmacist Council of Nigeria (PCN).

The graduands were alleged to have been stripped of their gowns at the entrance of the venue for reportedly failing to pass a course which was waived by the immediate past dean of the faculty, late Prof. Abdulkareem Aguna.

It was also alleged that the Vice-Chancellor, who is reportedly opposed to the waiver, said he could not honour the opinion of the late dean.

However, Director of Corporate Affairs of UNILORIN, Kunle Akogun, in a statement on Monday said the allegation was the work of mischief-makers.

“Hiding behind the faceless name, Tijani Faraday, these mischief-makers took to the social media last weekend in a fruitless attempt to rubbish the image of the university while maligning the character of its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem.

“But every right-thinking person would and should know that in the operations of a university system, no vice-chancellor has such power to cancel outright the graduation ceremony of students,” he said.
