As part of measures aimed at sanitizing the nation’s police force, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris has directed all special units in the force to desist from wearing black uniforms or any other dress earlier approved other than the normal police uniforms, while discharging their legitimate duties.
According to the directive, all personnel must wear the normal police uniforms, displaying clearly their name tags and force numbers in the case of the rank and files.
Those affected in the ‘no black uniform’ order include F-SARS, CTU, X-SQUAD, TIU, SIP, STS, Anti-Pipeline, IRT, ATIC and PCRRU.
This measure, according to sources from force headquarters in Abuja is fallout of the ongoing overhauling of F-SARS as ordered by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo early last week.
It added that the moves are also part of efforts tailored to salvage the force from its dwindling image.
The IGP’s order and directive which was sent to all police formations and zones across the country, warned all officers in the affected police units to desist from wearing black uniforms or any other dress earlier approved, other than the normal police uniforms.
The IGP, according to sources, directed that henceforth all personnel must wear the normal police uniforms displaying clearly their name tags, force numbers in the case of the rank and files, and police identification tags.
Mr. Idris’s ‘no black uniform order’ “would stand, “pending IGP’s determination of their operational dress code”.
The IGP further directed that any officer who flouts the directive will be severely sanctioned, while supervising officers under whom the order is flouted will be held liable.
