Pandemonium of shouting match on Saturday unsettled traders at the popular ogbeogonogo market in Asaba, Delta state when a suspected insane middle aged man allegedly raped a house wife right inside the market It was gathered that the suspect allegedly committed the rape around 2 pm where the trader deals in red oil and other food stuffs in what seemed to be mild drama admist quarrels and heated disagreement with customers Eyewitness, Janet Agbou, told our reporter that the suspect identified as Simeon “came from behind with his clothes torn to shreds, a clear indication that he was insane.
He was talking nineteen to the dozen and, suddenly, grabbed the woman, an oil seller. He was rough handling her, forcing his already erect manhood into her when passersby rescued the woman and beat the suspect up.”
The suspect was said to have been beaten mercilessly by the angry mob and, later, handed him over to the police at the “A” Division of the police.
The police, on close examination discovered the suspect was seemingly insane. Speaking to our reporter the victim who did not want her name in the print, said “ I was shocked somebody grabbed me from behind, and was forcing his manhood into me, I fell down with him as I shouted for help.
He was beaten mercilessly by people who later handed him over to the police. I am a married woman with three children. It was the devil’s work. I thank God. I have never seen such act”.
But the police public relations officer in the state, Mr. Aniamaka Andrew said, “upon all the beating, the man did not utter a word. We believe, from our investigation, that the suspect is mad; it is the hand work of the devil. We could not detain him; we only took him to the hospital for treatment.”
Investigation revealed that insane men outnumbered the women and, often, these insane men are seen at the market during busy hours either eating from the crumbs from the bins or doing other things.” Mrs. Omashola Williams, the state commissioner for women affairs, and community development, in her reaction, said
“Government has come to conclusion to remove the destitute from the streets, particularly these insane men and women. It is painful for a suspect to embarrass a house wife sexually”.
