conversion from the unorthodox Nation of Islam to Sunni Islam and a more inclusive approach.
Okonkwo hoped Kanu would have his “Mecca ” moment. While there is some merit in the Malcolm X analogy, Kanu clearly lacks the intellectual depth of the civil rights leader – something Okonkwo alluded to when he said the IPOB leader was “mixing the truth with hate speeches”.
One of the guests, Jafaar Jafaar, spoke of “deep-seated hatred for the north” from the pro-Biafrans. In response to claims that southeastern Nigeria was “marginalised” due to having less states and less local government areas than other regions, Jafaar claimed that it was demographics that determined the number of local government areas and northern Nigeria had more people.
He failed to mention that Nigeria has been incapable of holding credible censuses dating back to the colonial era.
The guests, who were at different locations and connected via Skype, kept interrupting each other, but Mefor made sure he made his point that Obasanjo and Yakubu Gowon, who was Nigeria’s military Head of State during the war, “should be brought to book” for war crimes.
The second part should make for interesting viewing, hopefully it will be better moderated by the host Femi Oke.
