“The same has to apply to Northerners in the South who could equally be worried about retaliatory attacks should things hit the fan up North,
“In the past, the government security has not been very effective in guaranteeing such peace and security in such circumstances as was seen in the Biafra war build up. This is where Nigeria has to learn from the mistake of the past. Without adequate and timely intervention , something bad could repeat itself,” David Otto said.
The security expert also criticized the brutal approach of Nigeria security agencies in handling the activities of activists seeking for the freedom of Biafra, noting that it has proved futile as their blunder has ended up fueling the resolve of the activists and winning them more supporters.
According to him,
“The method of clamping down on separatist movements has been inefficient and has been marred by abuse, brutality and even death in the hands of security forces in certain circumstances. Therefore the clampdown method has in most cases radicalised more people than has caused them to cede,
“What I am saying is that it is the role of the security forces to proactively address such sentiments and actions before they get out of hand. Remember , most revolutions are not caused by revolutionaries themselves but by the stupid and brutal reactions of government security forces. This is befitting quote that was well acclaimed by the Irish Republican Army (IRA).” Mr Otto said.
