An Indian university has installed 354 specially designed ceiling fans in student hostels as part of efforts to reduce the risk of suicide and improve student safety.

Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU), located in Surat, Gujarat, introduced the spring-loaded fans, which are designed to release under excessive weight and disconnect their electrical supply.
The initiative has attracted attention amid growing concerns about student mental health, academic pressure, examination anxiety, and career uncertainty.
While the installation represents an additional physical safety measure, it has also prompted debate about whether such interventions are sufficient without addressing the underlying causes of student distress.
Some observers have welcomed the precaution, while others have emphasised the importance of accessible counselling, emotional support, and early intervention.
