The Imo State Government has officially transferred the Okigwe General Hospital to the Federal Ministry of Health, paving the way for the establishment and commencement of operations of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Okigwe.
The handover was concluded during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the Federal Ministry of Health to the Government House, Owerri, where they were received by Governor Hope Uzodimma.

The development marks a significant milestone in the state’s healthcare sector, with the Federal Government set to assume full management of the facility and expand healthcare services in the Okigwe zone and surrounding communities.
Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Uzodimma said the state government had undertaken extensive infrastructural upgrades to ensure a smooth transition and immediate take-off of the new Federal Medical Centre.
According to him, “The Imo State Government has completed critical infrastructure required for the seamless take-over of the facility by the Federal Government. Our goal is to improve access to quality healthcare and ensure that the people of Okigwe and neighbouring communities benefit from specialized medical services.”
The governor noted that the transfer reflects the administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and fostering collaboration with the Federal Government for the benefit of residents.
Members of the Federal Ministry of Health delegation commended the state government for putting the necessary facilities in place, describing the handover as a major step towards enhancing healthcare capacity in the region.
“The readiness of the facility will enable the Federal Medical Centre to commence operations without delay, bringing improved healthcare services closer to the people,” a member of the delegation stated.
The transition is expected to boost specialized healthcare delivery, create opportunities for medical personnel, and provide residents of the Okigwe zone with greater access to advanced medical care under federal administration.
