Resident Doctors Call Off Strike After Reaching Interim Agreement With FG

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its planned nationwide strike after reaching an understanding with the Federal Government of Nigeria on several key demands.

The decision was announced on Tuesday, April 7, following an emergency meeting of the association’s National Executive Council, where members reviewed assurances provided by government representatives.

According to NARD, the suspension comes in response to commitments made by the government to address critical issues affecting resident doctors, particularly the payment of outstanding salaries and allowances, as well as improvements in overall welfare.

The association noted that progress recorded during negotiations influenced its decision to give the dialogue process more time. Among the areas of focus are the settlement of salary arrears, payment of hazard allowances, and resolving concerns related to the Medical Residency Training Fund.

However, NARD clarified that while the strike has been suspended, the underlying issues have not been fully resolved. It added that the Federal Government has shown a renewed commitment to tackling the concerns that led to the planned industrial action.

The doctors emphasized that they will continue to monitor developments closely as discussions with the government progress.
