The Rector of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, Prof. Christopher Kalu Okoro, has officially welcomed new students during the institution’s 32nd matriculation ceremony, describing the occasion as historic and urging the matriculants to embrace discipline, hard work, and integrity throughout their academic journey.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Okoro noted that this matriculation holds special significance as it coincides with the second-year anniversary of his administration. He clocked two years in office on March 18, though he formally resumed on March 20.
The Rector used the platform to heap praise on the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, describing him as a transformative leader who has given the institution everything it needed.
“If you are a Nigerian, you should know by now that there is nothing else to say about this hero of our time because the world has run out of adjectives and superlatives to describe him,” Prof. Okoro said. “Nigerians agree that he is the best governor in this dispensation. In Abia, we have no doubt whatsoever that he is the human Messiah sent to liberate the land.”
He added, “Your Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, you have given us everything we ever needed and asked for as an institution. You have fulfilled promises that sounded so good, that many thought they were just promises.”
The Rector acknowledged that the polytechnic is currently enjoying its highest enrollment in 12 years, attributing this to the confidence reposed in his administration by parents and students. He noted that the institution has expanded its academic curriculum, introduced new courses, and sharpened its focus on skills acquisition and vocational training.
In a major announcement, Prof. Okoro revealed that the incoming students would be the first to utilize the facilities at the institution’s Osisioma campus, which includes modern hostels for boys and girls and a world-class learning environment.
“Our dear matriculant, let me unequivocally remark that you have joined this train at a very auspicious time in the history of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic,” he said. “This polytechnic is currently enjoying a season of upward mobility, and we are proud to welcome you on board as worthy ambassadors of a culture of excellence.”
The Rector charged the new students to remain focused, warning that there are no shortcuts to success.
“You have no option than to work hard in your studies, as there is no shortcut to success here. Read your books and you will pass your examinations,” he said. “Alongside test and assignment, attendance to class is part of continuous assessment, and it is compulsory that you attend lectures. Avoid anything that will distract you.”
He issued a stern warning against misconduct, stating that the institution has no tolerance for immoral behavior.
“You are not here to become a courtesan,” he declared. “There is no room for courtesans at Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic. Any student involved in nefarious activities will face the full weight of the law. Students must be law-abiding, civil, and respectful at all times.”
The Rector also reassured students of his accessibility, noting that he runs an open-door policy and that his phone line remains available to students 24 hours a day.
Prof. Okoro concluded his address with a fatherly blessing over the new students, praying for wisdom, protection, and success throughout their stay.
“May your journey in this institution be guided by wisdom beyond years. May you be endowed with understanding, insight, and intellectual discipline. May your character shine brighter than your certificates,” he prayed. “May your years in this polytechnic be marked by growth, excellence, and honor, and may you emerge not only educated, but transformed, responsible, and impactful citizens.”
The Rector extended gratitude to several individuals who have contributed to the institution’s progress, including the Honourable Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche, whom he described as “our mother indeed.” He also thanked Honourable Kalu Uche, Chairman of the Abia State House Committee on Education, Chief Chidoke James Umeikaban, whom he described as a mentor and pillar of support, and the Governing Council led by Chief Stanley Egege.
He further appreciated members of the State House of Assembly, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and his management team for their unwavering support.
In a personal note, Prof. Okoro acknowledged his wife, Mrs. Geraldine Onyinyechi Okoro, Osodiachi, whom he described as a major factor in his success, and his children—Osoma, Godswin, Chinwe, and Roserisse—for their support and inspiration.
The ceremony featured the formal presentation of matriculating students by the deans of various schools, including the School of Business and Management Technology, School of Environmental Design and Technology, School of Engineering Technology, School of Science and Industrial Technology, and the Centre for Continuing Education.
