…As Ministry Celebrates World Heritage Day 2025 in Grand Style

The Akwa Ibom State Government has once again underscored its dedication to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the state, aimed at bolstering the hospitality and tourism sectors as a strategic means to diversify the economy and lessen dependence on federal allocations and oil revenues.
This commitment was prominently featured by the State Deputy Governor, Senator (Dr.) Akon Eyakenyi, during the inaugural World Heritage Day celebration hosted by the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Culture and Tourism on April 19, 2025, at the Watbridge Hotels and Suites in Uyo.
Speaking on behalf of Dr. Eyakenyi, Mr. Okokon Ufi, Special Assistant to the Governor on Boundary Matters, highlighted the progressive vision of Governor Pastor Umo Eno Phd, noting his recognition of the importance of cultural preservation for future generations. The state government is proactively aiming to diminish its reliance on federal funding by placing tourism at the forefront of the ARISE Agenda. Dr. Eyakenyi emphasized that preserving cultural heritage is crucial for driving economic growth and commended the Governor for recognizing tourism’s revenue-generating potential.
In a passionate call to action, the Deputy Governor encouraged all custodians of the state’s historical sites and monuments to prioritize their protection and preservation for future generations.
Dr. Anieti Udofia, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, also addressed the audience, emphasizing that heritage encompasses more than just the distinctive characteristics of the Akwa Ibom people. He called for heightened awareness to protect heritage sites from both natural and human-induced threats, highlighting the significant economic benefits these sites can offer.
“This year’s theme, ‘Cultural Heritage and Economic Development: Optimizing the Tourism Component of the ARISE Agenda,’ aims to inspire members of the Akwa Ibom community to appreciate the immense economic potential of their heritage through the identification and promotion of tourism initiatives,” stated Dr. Udofia. He further remarked, “Our heritage goes beyond hospitality; it includes our unique cuisines and the breathtaking beauty of our landscapes. Our strength lies in our resilience and our collective duty to explore the untapped tourism opportunities that await us.”
The Commissioner reaffirmed the government’s dedication to enhancing tourism and cultural heritage for the collective benefit of all Akwa Ibom citizens, aligning with Governor Umo Eno’s vision to position Akwa Ibom as a prime investment destination.
The keynote speaker, Mr. Victor Ekpuk, a renowned visual artist connecting virtually from Washington D.C., urged the Akwa Ibom State Government to persist in investing in infrastructure to enhance tourism. He stressed the significance of locals sharing their narratives as a means of preserving cultural heritage and advocated for the reintroduction of mother tongues and indigenous languages in school curriculum’s, asserting that this would foster a greater connection for children with the traditions of Akwa Ibom.
Another featured speaker, Associate Professor Dr. Nkereuwem Edemekong from the University of Uyo’s Department of History and International Studies, discussed “Cultural Heritage as a Driver of Economic Development.” He urged a comprehensive understanding of local history and values, advocating against colonial misinterpretations and asserting that, when harnessed effectively, cultural heritage can facilitate job creation.
Attendees enjoyed art exhibitions showcasing creativity from various Local Government Areas and private galleries, as well as panel discussions moderated by Mrs. Ime Udoh, the Governor’s Special Assistant on Tourism. Cultural leaders and visual artists provided valuable insights into strategies for preserving the rich heritage of the Akwa Ibom people.
The celebration drew a diverse array of cultural custodians, including His Eminence Ntenyin (Dr.) Solomon Etuk JP, CFR, President General of the Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers, who praised Dr. Udofia for his proactive initiatives in rejuvenating the treasured values of the Akwa Ibom people.
As the Akwa Ibom State Government moves forward, the commitment to cultural heritage and tourism development remains a pivotal focus, promising a future where the state’s rich cultural tapestry continues to thrive.
