The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) management has issued a disconnection notice to the University of Benin (UNIBEN) due to its failure to settle outstanding electricity bills, according to a report by Igbere TV.
A notice, dated May 22, 2024, and signed by Engr Tobi, was posted on the university walls, instructing UNIBEN to settle its estimated bill of N264,490,313 for April within three days.
This action follows UNIBEN’s recent implementation of load shedding in response to a 340% surge in its electricity bill, attributed to the Nigerian government’s tariff hike, particularly affecting Band A consumers like UNIBEN.
According to a memo titled ‘Update on Power Supply to University Community’, UNIBEN management stated that they could no longer afford the increased tariff, leading to a spike in April’s consumption from N80 million to N280 million.
Despite the situation, UNIBEN disclosed ongoing negotiations with BEDC and expressed hope for a swift resolution to restore regular power supply.
“Management appreciates your usual support, understanding and regrets any inconveniences the increment may have caused you,” the statement read.
But sadly, amid the ongoing negotiations and load shedding, the Management of BEDC has issued the University Management a three-day ultimatum to pay up their bills or have their services (electricity) withdrawn from the University premises.
As at the time of filling this report, the University Management was yet to formally comment on the latest development. Efforts to get the reaction of Spokesperson for the Institution, Dr Benedicta Ehanire were unsuccessful.
