The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Florence Obi, has instructed a temporary suspension of undergraduate school charges until further notice, in response to a student protest against recent adjustments.
According to a statement from the University’s Registrar, Gabriel Egbe, the decision stems from the students’ demonstration concerning the recent hike in school charges.
The university’s management, characterized as a responsive administration, has engaged in constructive discussions with the students to address the issue.
Emphasizing the institution’s commitment to student welfare, Egbe assured the students, regarded as critical stakeholders, that proactive measures have been taken to find a resolution.
During Monday’s protest against the increased charges, students expressed concerns about the challenging economic climate in Nigeria, stating that the increment could force some students to discontinue their education.
In an earlier communication released over the weekend, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Effiong Eyo, explained that the fee adjustment was prompted by economic realities and the imperative to uphold the academic standards for which the University of Calabar is recognized.
The statement clarified that the hundred percent increment would be implemented starting from the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions.
