Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, took a significant step on Wednesday by endorsing legislation that sets a fresh retirement age for teachers in the state.
The newly established retirement age is now either 65 years of age or 40 years of service, replacing the previous criteria of 35 years of service or reaching 60 years of age.
Following the signing of the bill into law, Governor Uzodimma expressed his belief that this innovative measure would serve as a motivational factor for teachers within the public school system in the state.
“Having given the teachers an extra five years, they are expected to bring out their time and work harder to give Imo children the best form of teaching and learning and graduate them as the best in Nigeria,” he said.
He called the gesture “value addition” and urged the teachers to be more committed and serious about their jobs.
Uzodimma congratulated them and stated that the “law is intended to encourage teachers to have a sense of job security and to be more effective and efficient in their duties.”
