Students from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) took action on Wednesday by gathering at the Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in protest against the apprehension of their fellow students.
Escorted by three Coaster buses and three Hummer buses, the group was led by the university’s Students’ Union Government (SUG).
The university’s administration expressed its surprise, as it had not been informed by the EFCC about the involvement of its students in financial misconduct.
It was reported that EFCC officials arrested no fewer than 70 students from the institution during an early morning raid on off-campus hostels.
The hostels raided were Fine Touch and Superb hostels in Oduduwa Estate, Ile-Ife.
OAU SUG president Abass Ojo said the union had details of “72 students picked up from their hostels, with phones and cars taken away.
“Information at our reach revealed that EFCC officials stormed the two hostels between 1:40 a.m. and 4:00 a.m., but the question remains: how can you arrest people for using iPhones, laptops, and cars?” he asked.
OAU spokesman Olanrewaju Abiodun, who spoke with NAN, said the university had yet to confirm if truly those arrested were OAU students.
