In a recent development, Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), was reportedly apprehended in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.
This information was relayed to the media by Benson Upah, the Head of Media at the NLC headquarters.
According to Upah, Ajaero was taken into custody on Wednesday by armed authorities at the State Council Secretariat of the congress in Owerri. Subsequently, he was transported to an undisclosed location.
Upah said: “President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero was picked up a few minutes ago from NLC state council secretariat by heavily armed policemen in Owerri and taken to an unknown destination.”
The NLC is leading a statewide protest and industrial action in Imo over what it described as lack of respect for workers, unpaid salaries, among others.
Earlier at a press briefing, Ajaero accused Imo State Government of “violating the rights of the Nigerian workers in the state.”
