Policeman Allegedly Beats 60-Year-Old Woman To Coma In Delta

A police officer assigned to the Enerhen Police Division in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State is reported to have assaulted and severely injured a 60-year-old woman named Monica Anyamah, leaving her in a state of unconsciousness.

Monica Anyamah is presently under medical care at an undisclosed hospital, as confirmed by newsmen.

During a phone conversation with our correspondent, the victim’s daughter, who is known as Alexandria, provided details about the incident, stating that it took place on Saturday, October 21, in the Agbarho community.

The policeman who allegedly beat up the old woman was simply identified as Bobby.

It was gathered that the policeman detained the woman at the Agbarho Division in Ughelli North Local Government Area.

While noting that her mother is hypertensive and diabetic, Alexandria said the policeman denied her access to medication.

She further claimed that the policeman also beat and injured her father.

According to Alexandria, the woman has “been having seizures since Saturday after the policeman dealt a blow to her head”.

Alexandria demanded justice.

“I need justice for my mother dear Nigerians please,” she said.

Narrating how the incident occurred, Alexandria said her mother, who is a primary school teacher and businesswoman, left the house as early as 7:00 am to Effurun market where she sells Okrika clothes but when she returned home at about 5:30 pm, she discovered that her house help, simply identified as Rejoice, had packed her belongings and ran out of the house.

Alexandria said her parents searched for her and called the agent, identified as Wisdom, who brought the house help, to report the girl’s sudden disappearance.

She said when they got to Wisdom’s house, they met Rejoice there. According to her, Wisdom, was with the policeman, Bobby.

Bobby, she further alleged, pounced on her father, injured him and beat his mother to coma in his presence.

The Delta State Chairman of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR, Comrade, A.P. Edariese in a statement sent to our correspondent, said the matter is “a case of brutalisation”.

He said the policeman, Bobby, allegedly brutalised and detained the victim in connivance with his colleagues at Agbarho Police Division.

Edariese said the incident has placed the health of the woman who is a government school teacher in a precarious situation.

He called on the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Wale Abass, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe and the Divisional Police Officer, Agbarho, to intervene and unravel the mystery surrounding the matter and help save the life of the victim.

He also said the policeman should be arrested for allegedly beating the victim.

When contacted for comments, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, denied the report in a text message sent to our correspondent.

The text message he sent simply read: “False”.

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Wale Abass, is yet to respond to a text message sent to him over the incident.
