The Department of State Services (DSS) has taken into custody Cyril Ndifon, a law professor at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), who stands accused of sexual harassment.
Ndifon’s suspension from his role as the dean of the Faculty of Law followed student protests against him.
According to DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya, Ndifon’s arrest took place at the behest of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). This action was prompted by Ndifon’s repeated refusal to comply with their invitations regarding the allegations against him.
Furthermore, Afunanya noted that Ndifon’s arrest transpired in Calabar, Cross River State, on Wednesday, executed by DSS operatives following a court order.
Afunanya said, “The ICPC has sought the collaboration of the Department of State Services (DSS), on the University of Calabar (UNICAL) s*x scandal matter involving Professor Cyril Ndifon, the erstwhile Dean of Faculty of Law of the Institution.
“The commission had disclosed the refusal of Ndifon to honour its several invitations thus his eventual arrest in Calabar, Cross River State by its operatives on 4th October, 2023 based on a court order.
“However, the Service, following the commission’s request and in the spirit of interagency cooperation, supported it for a successful operation.”
Ndifon has since instituted a suit against the vice chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, and other officers at the National Industrial Court in Calabar.
The law professor said he dragged Obi and others to court to seek redress and clear his name from the smear campaign, accusing the vice-chancellor of sponsoring the protest simply because she wanted him out of his position as dean.
