Police Cadet Dies in Academy, Colleagues Allege Starvation

A tragedy has unfolded at the Nigeria Police Academy (P*L*C), Wudil, Kano State, where a young police cadet named Sulaiman Jika, who was enrolled in a 100-level course, tragically lost his life.

The circumstances surrounding his death are deeply distressing, as it is alleged that he had been subjected to severe starvation and malnutrition for a period exceeding two weeks.

Sulaiman Jika hailed from Adamawa State and was pursuing his studies in the Department of Computer Science at the academy. The fateful incident that led to his untimely demise occurred in the early hours of a Saturday when he collapsed within the confines of the academy, specifically inside a restroom. This heartbreaking event has cast a shadow of sorrow over the entire institution.

Some of the cadets accused the commandant, Assistant Inspector-General, Sadiq Abubakar, of high-handedness and financial mismanagement of feeding allowance meant for the students.

“He was left untreated (at the academy’s clinic) because there are no drugs and no medical officer to attend to him in the unconducive environment, before he gave up and died,” a source quoted by PUNCH said.

Another cadet who spoke on the condition of anonymity said: “Cadets collapse daily here during training due to fatigue, because it’s either they’re starved, malnourished, or both.”
