The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), Zimbabwe’s opposition party, is demanding new elections following their declaration that the recent general election was marred by fraud.
Deputy spokesperson Ostallos Siziba stated that the CCC intends to engage with the African Union and the regional body Sadc to urge Zanu-PF, the ruling party, to conduct fresh elections and dissolve the electoral commission.
He would not be drawn to revealing whether his party would take the legal route to challenge the results.
He said CCC would “employ all the measures at the right time”.
Party leader Nelson Chamisa won 44% of the vote, but he insists those results were false.
Nevertheless, several regional leaders, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, have extended their congratulations to President Emmerson Mnangagwa for his victory, even though preliminary assessments by Sadc election observers indicate that the elections did not meet the recognized democratic benchmarks.
