Nigeria Football Federation president, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau has disclosed that the federation has turned down the request by top officials of the IMC to change the name of the league to Nigeria Premier League (NPL) from the recognized Nigeria Professional Football League(NPFL).
“If the Interim League Management want to change the name of the league, they should go to the Congress of Nigeria football. It is the congress that has the power to change and ratify any name”
“NPFL is a creation of the congress backed up with necessary laws and statutes. It will be an aberration to unilaterally change the name without recourse to statues of the federation. I cannot preside over such ‘illegality’ a bewildered Gusau said in a chat.
“If I want to address them I can only use NPFL. That’s what is recognized constitutionally” he said
NPFL was created and incorporated by the NFF in 2012 to replace Nigeria Football League which had become the sick baby of Nigerian football due to maladministration, ineptitude and crass corruption with the League Management Company(LMC) headed by Alhaji Shehu Dikko taking over the reins of the office.
But, since the composition of the newly formed Interim League Management (IMC) headed by Hon.Gbenga Elegbeleye the league had opted to use the name NPL instead of NPFL.
