American sprinter who won two gold medals at the 1968 Olympics Lee Evans will be buried on Thursday at the Segun Odegbami International College and Sports Academy in Wasimi, Ogun State.
Evans died on May 19 at the age of 74.
Renowned cinematographer Tunde Kelani confirmed Evans’ funeral.
“Lee Evans, the American sprinter and winner of two gold medals in the 1968 Olympics goes home today. Lee will be buried this morning on the grounds of Segun Odegbami International College and Sports Academy in Wasimi, Ogun State. May his soul rest in peace,” he wrote.
Ex-Nigeria international Segun Odegbami had raised the alarm over Evans’ deteriorating health before his death.
Evans previously held a world record in the 400 metres race. He was the first to break the 44-second barrier for the 400 metres event when he was just 21.
He went on to break about 11 world records over different distances during his career as a sprints athlete.
He enjoyed a successful lengthy coaching career after his retirement.
