Kwara Hijab Controversy: Teachers Locked Out, Christians Sing At School Entrance

Some churches have refused to reopen their schools following a directive by the Kwara State Government to 10 schools at the centre of the controversy over the use of hijab by female Muslim students.

Christian faithful on Friday morning gathered in front of Cherubim and Seraphim (C&S) College, Sabo-Oke, singing and dancing.

A heap of sand was also placed in front of the gate to prevent teachers and pupils from gaining entrance.

Baptist School, Surulere, where Christians clashed with Muslims earlier in the week was, however, peaceful as teachers gathered in groups inside the school.

Kwara State Government had announced the reopening of the missionary schools to enable final year students prepare for their examinations.

The affected schools are C&S College, Sabo-Oke; St. Anthony’s Secondary School, Offa Road; ECWA School, Oja Iya; Surulere Baptist Secondary School, and Bishop Smith Secondary School, Agba Dam.

Others are CAC Secondary School, Asa Dam road; St. Barnabas Secondary School, Sabo-Oke; St. John School Maraba; St. Williams Secondary School, Taiwo Isale, and St. James Secondary School, Maraba.

Meanwhile, the use of hijab has been approved in public schools.
