The Nigerian military has successfully rescued one of the students of Government Girls’ Secondary School (GGSS) in Chibok, Borno State abducted by Boko Haram fighters on April 14, 2014.
Hauwa Maiyanga, it was learnt, was freed after a month of military onslaught on Boko Haram stronghold in Sambisa forest.
“For a month now, troops have been bombarding the Sambisa forest and Boko Haram hideouts in the operations Tura Takaibango and Lafiya Dole, and many civilians are being rescued,” TheCable quoted a military source as saying.
“When the enemies are neutralised, those they have captured regain freedom. The Chibok girl is one of those that has been freed, after her captors hideout was cleared. There are many other girls, we are still trying to find out where they were stolen from.”
The BBC said it spoke with the father of one of the schoolgirls who said his daughter “escaped” with other captives during fighting. No names were given.
Maiyanga and more than 200 girls were preparing for their final examination when the insurgents stormed their hostels in the middle of the night.
About half of them have been rescued following global outcry fuelled by the #BringBackOurGirls movement.
It was gathered that Maiyanga’s parents have been briefed about the incident and are expected at the Operation Lafiya Dole theatre command at Maimalari Barracks in Maiduguri, Borno State capital.
