Breaking: PDP Senators Now Sleeping At The National Assembly, Keeping Vigil Over APC Plot To Remove Saraki (SEE PHOTOS)

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators are taking turns to sleep over at the National Assembly Complex to prevent a noctunal removal of Senate President Bukola Saraki by their All Progressives Congress (APC) colleagues, a senator said yesterday.

Senator Philip Gyunka (PDP Nasarawa North) spoke in Lafia, the state capital, yesterday when he presented his letter of intent to contest for Nasarawa State governor, to the leadership of the PDP in the state..

He said: “I woke up this morning from my night shift and I will still be going back to my night shift. That is to say we are keeping vigil.

“We are rotating the shift among ourselves. As regards what they are saying about impeachment (removal), it is not possible because the international community is aware of their plot.

“Don’t be discouraged. They will intimidate you as they do to us. Like myself, I don’t know how many times they have been calling me. We didn’t know they have come to truncate democracy. But the Senate president, being a product of PDP, has come to the rescue of the the situation.

“We are keeping watch on their plans.

“If they want the Senate President removed, which is impossible they must have two third majorities.

“They have been attempting and failing. I know they will still make attempts but they will not succeed because I know Nigerians will not allow them to make mockery of the nation’s democracy.

“If you hear a lawmaker speaking, he is speaking the minds of thousands of people.

“How then should someone, who was appointed and has neither gone to the rural areas to feel the pulse of the people, nor held town hall meeting be insisting that a man that was duly chosen by his colleagues be removed at all course.

“Oshiomhole (Adams) should be educated that this is not unionism. This is an issue that has to do with the Constitution and we will not allow him to violate it,” he said.

The senator told PDP supporters that he would bring to the office of the governor the heart of a servant who had known hard times, tasted poverty and acquired requisite discipline to govern.

“I shall bring the benefit of my vast experience as an economist, banker, and a legislator at both the state and federal levels to reform and transform the state.

“ I will bring a new vision and new direction to governance that will be truly democratic, representative and professional to deliver and redeem the state from its downward descent,” Gyunka said.

State PDP Chairman Francis Orogu said the state chapter of the party was proud of its representatives at the National Assembly and would encourage them to maintain the tempo of their loyalty to the PDP.

Presidency Reacts For USA, UK Claims To Stop Buhari From 2019 Election

The Presidency on Tuesday said there was no truth in a media report (not The PUNCH) that some foreign powers were putting pressure on President Muhammadu Buhari not to seek re-election in 2019.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, said this in a statement made available to journalists.

Adesina was reacting to a story titled ‘Pressure mounts on Buhari not to seek re-election,’ which claimed that foreign powers, including the European Union, United States of America, United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia, were putting pressure on Buhari not to seek re-election.

The presidential spokesman said contrary to the report, Buhari was being held in high esteem in the countries mentioned in the report.

He said because Buhari was not flippant, he gave a deep thought to the prospect before announcing his bid for a second term in office.

Adesina added that it was only those who feared electoral loss that were trying to dissuade the President from running by all means.

He said by claiming that it got feelers that Buhari might opt out of the 2019 presidential election, the newspaper embarrassed itself.

The statement read in part, “We thought the fake news was the sole preserve of the social media in this season. Alas, a traditional medium has caught the bug. Obviously, the author of the story just got a brainwave, or got procured by anti-democratic elements, and then penned the mischief.

“If there are quarters in which President Buhari is held in very high esteem, and the work he is doing for Nigeria highly lauded, it is in the countries mentioned. Some of them are equally bastions of democracy, and will not interfere in the democratic affairs of a sovereign country. The newspaper should simply tell its story to the marines.

“President Buhari is not a flippant or frivolous individual. He gave deep thought to the prospect, before announcing his bid for a second term in office.”

“It is only those who fear that their goose would be cooked, if they met him at the polls, that are trying to dissuade him from running by all means, including sponsored newspaper stories.

Saraki, Dogara issue joint statement on why National Assembly cannot reconvene

The Senate President Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, have given reasons the two chambers of the National Assembly will not reconvene in the immediate future

They asked legislators to go about their affairs while on holiday.

Saraki and Dogara in a joint statement on Tuesday morning, admitted that there were proposals to reconvene, to deliberate on the reports of the Joint Committees on Electoral Matters arising from interactions with officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The presiding officers, however, said that the meetings have not taken place and that many legislators have also gone on Hajj, making the prospects for reconvening improbable.

The statement issued on their behalf by their respective spokespersons, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Senate and Turaki Hassan, House read thus: “The Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki and Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, have directed that we inform all Senators, Honorable members and the public that a date has not been set for the reconvening of the Senate and the House of Representatives to consider the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) 2019 elections budget request forwarded by President Muhammadu Buhari on July 17, 2018.

“The leadership of the two chambers had met and agreed to reconvene to consider the proposal this week before which a meeting between the Joint Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Electoral Matters and officials of the INEC must have held on or before Monday August 13, 2018.

“The joint committees were also expected to meet with the joint Senate and House Committees on Appropriations, Loans and Debts on the Eurobond loan request after which two reports would have been ready for presentation in the two chambers.

“However, no such meeting had taken place yet as a result of which both Senate and House of Representatives cannot reconvene as there is no report to consider.

“Until the Committees have a ready report for the consideration of the two chambers, it will be most irresponsible to recall members from recess especially those that may have travelled to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj.”

Senator Akpabio Gives Condition To Declare His Seat Vacant After Defection

Former Senate Minority Leader Godswill Akpabio yesterday declared as mere “rumour” the insinuation that his seat was likely to be declared vacant by Senate President Bukola Saraki.

He said he was not perturbed by the report, saying over alleged plot to declare his seat vacant.

The Akwa Ibom North west senator insisted that if the Senate President declares his seat vacant, Saraki’s seat should also be declared vacant especially when there is no division in the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Asked if he is perturbed about reports that his seat might be declared vacant due to his defection to the APC, Akpabio said:

“Even as you are looking at me, do I look perturbed? I have not heard the report. Because the reason why I think that is a rumour is that there is, at the moment, no division in the APC.

“The APC is one family. If you hear about R-APC that was not really a political party that was not a division, has since been consumed in what they call Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP).

“So, there is no division. And so, any defection from APC to PDP, we will like to declare those seats vacant.”

On the insistence of the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole that Saraki should beremoved if he refused to resign and whether they are mobilising for the impeachment, Akpabio said

He said: “I just came in from Ikot-Ekpene, (Akwa Ibom State) where I decided with my people to join the APC. I’m yet to be briefed on any of those items.

“I have not heard anything. And what I am hearing now is what you are telling me. But why don’t you wait for me to formally talk to you. I believe that when the National Assembly resumes you will hear from me directly. So, exercise patience.”

Akpabio described his defection as “a big event that attracted the high and mighty in the country.”

Prodded to say more Akpabio said “I have noted all your reports. We are also in Abuja. So, thank you for the reports.”

But an official in the Senate President’s office said: “It is part of the blackmail to link Saraki with plot to declare Senator Godswill Akpabio’s seat vacant.

“The processes of declaring a seat vacant is clear. Saraki has nothing to do with the insinuation to declare any seat vacant. We don’t want to be drawn into the unnecessary insinuation.

“It is part of the black because Saraki has no plan to declare anybody’s seat vacant,” says a source in Saraki’s office who does not want his name mentioned.”
