Update: Buhari Partially Escapes Impeachment Notice In Senate

Loading...

The Senate on Thursday, fell short of activating Section 143 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution, as amended, which sets in motion the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The latest move was in reaction to the alleged violation of Section 80 of the same 1999 Nigerian Constitution, as amended by Buhari, wherein he withdrew $496 million from the Excess Crude Account to purchase military helicopters without any approval by the National Assembly.

The motion was moved by Senator Matthew Urhoghide and seconded by Senator Chukwuka Utazi.

The matter has been referred to the Senate committee on Judiciary for further legislative advice. The committee is expected to report back next Wednesday.

Dino Melaye: APC Senator attacks Buhari’s govt, says I’m ready to die

Senator on the platform of the All Progressives Congress Congress, APC, Muhammed Shittu, has lambasted the Federal Government over the alleged manhandling of Senator from Kogi West, Dino Melaye by police operatives.

Shittu, a Jigawa State lawmaker said under the current administration, people can be killed for saying the truth

Speaking on the face-off between Melaye and the police, on the floor of the senate, Shittu said Nigerians did not vote in APC government to be mistreated.

He said, “The law now works against people who are perceived to be enemies. You fight for change and this is the kind of change we are experiencing today. There are proofs and I know because of what I’ve said, I can be killed. I don’t mind being killed.

“It is good for one to speak the truth and be killed. What is happening to us today is not fair and we have the rights to our opinions. Everybody is against the national assembly as if we are the enemies of this nation.

We are not enemies. We are representatives of the people and as such, we must speak the truth. We should condemn, in totality, what is happening. What is happening is not the change.

If this is change, I doubt if I can continue under this kind of environment. And I know a lot of people share a similar opinion with me.

“This is no change. We didn’t vote this government to be mistreated. We didn’t vote this government to abuse court processes and procedures. It’s not fair, we advise the government to change before it is late.”

Igbos will benefit more if President Buhari leaves office”- Says Obasanjo says

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo while speaking at a meeting of the Coalition of Nigerian Movement CNM in Awka, Anambra State, yesterday has said that Nigerians from the South East region will benefit the most if President Buhari is voted out of office in 2019.

He also declared that he is not in support of President Buhari’s re-election bid, yesterday said voting President Buhari out come 2019 is in the best interest of the Igbos.

Speaking through the South East coordinator of CNM, Dr. Okey Nwosu, the ex-president said:

“The meeting is a wake-up call for Nd’Igbo to dump APC and collaborate with CNM, which is the best alternative for their rescue from poverty, hunger, recklessness and ethnic cleansing in the hands of the Hausa/Fulani marauders. Every Nigerian leader is very much embarrassed with the state of the nation where people are attacked, killed, raped and made refuges in their own homes. Political leaders must advocate action against these senseless killings and seek how to design a new democratic action plan to ensure we take care of this conundrum democratically, and say, ‘Enough is enough.’ If unchecked, these unethical activities will lead to the destruction of the country. It does not augur well for Nigeria’s development.” he said

BREAKING: Court Sentence Nigerian Senator To Imprisonment

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered the remand of Senator Peter Nwaoboshi in Ikoyi Prison.

The remand order follows the arraignment of the senator by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of fraud.

Senator Nwaoboshi, the lawmaker representing Delta North district at the National Assembly, was arraigned by the anti-graft agency on Wednesday on two counts of alleged fraud.

After listening to the arguments for and against his bail application, Justice Mohammed Idris ordered that the lawmaker be remanded in prison till Friday when a ruling would be given on whether or not to admit him to bail.

Counsel to Senator Nwaboshi had asked the court to grant his client bail on self-recognisance, but the EFCC opposed the bail application; informing the court that there were still pending charges against the lawmaker.

Maina, herdsmen treated better than Dino Melaye – Omokri faults Senator’s arrest

Reno Omokri, the former aide to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan says Fulani herdsmen accused of killing Nigerians in some parts of the country are being treated better than Senator Dino Melaye.

Omokri made the remark in reaction to the controversies surrounding the arrest of Sen. Melaye on Tuesday.

Reacting on his Twitter page, Omokri faulted police statement on Melaye’s arrest, adding that the statement had nothing incriminating in it.

The former presidential spokesman wrote “I read the police’s statement on @dino_melaye and it was a detailed statement saying nothing.

“If only the Nigerian police can be as serious about going after enemies of Nigeria, like herdsmen, as they are with going after enemies of President Buhari, like Dasuki, Dino and Saraki.

Even the thugs who stole the @NGRSenate’s mace were not treated as brutally as @dino_melaye. Herdsmen who kill Nigerians are treated better than Dino. Maina was brought back to Nigeria and given armed guards, Dino was stopped from leaving Nigeria and maltreated by armed guards!”

Obituary And ‘Burial’ Of Saraki By Senator Omo-Agege’s Constituency (Photos)

This is very sad…talking about the lengths people go just because of politics. An obituary banner was designed for the ”burial” of senate president, Bukola Saraki over the suspension of senator Ovie Omo-Agege representing Delta Central at the National Assembly.

The banner which was purportedly designed by some constituents in Delta state – was done to announce the political death of the senate president for ”conspiring” against their lawmaker to suspend him as they held a ‘burial’ for him (Saraki) few days ago in Abraka.

Meanwhile, contrary to belief in some quarters that Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was suspended over his opposition to the election reordering bill, Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, has said the senator representing Delta Central was sanctioned for taking the Senate to court.

Taking the Senate to court, according to Saraki, smacks of gross indiscipline, which should not be condoned by the upper chamber. Omo-Agege, who was billed to appear before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions over his comments on the amendment of Electoral Act, 2018, had sued the Senate in a bid to stop his appearance.

Lai Mohammed speaks on Buhari’s second term, insecurity

The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, has bragged that President Muhammadu Buhari is healthy and that his policies will “easily” earn him re-election in 2019.

Mohammed also pointed to some progress against Boko Haram militants, such as breaking their grip on territory.

He further revealed that the reason for the farmers-herdsmen clash had to do with diminishing resources than ethnic or religious inclinations.

He told Bloomberg in an interview: “He (Buhari) is very strong and well. I have never lost sleep over the re-election. Buhari will easily win.”

On Boko Haram insurgeny, Mohammed said: “We are using third parties, including foreign parties, through backdoor channels. But the challenge is that there are many factions.”

On farmers-herdsmen crisis, the Minister said: “The talks are looking good. Some people will criticize this and say how about all those people they killed. But we cannot continue to be stranded in the past forever. We should think about the future, and want a peaceful future.

“The issue is not ethnic or religious, but a problem of diminishing resources, a growing population and climate change that’s dramatically reduced the size of Lake Chad and disrupted the economy in the region

APC Convention: Chairmen In Four South-south States Reject Oshiomhole

Chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in all but two of the six states in the south-south have denied endorsing Adams Oshiomhole, former governor of Edo state, for the chairmanship position of the party.

At a press conference on Monday, they said John Oyegun, chairman of the ruling party, reserved the right to seek reelection.

The state chairmen are Davies Ikanya, Rivers; Joseph Fafi, Bayelsa; Etim John, Cross River; Amadu Attai, Akwa ibom.

They had stormed out of the south-south zonal caucus meeting held at the Edo state government house on Monday in protest of what they said were plans by Godwin Obaseki, governor of the state, and Hilliard Eta, zonal vice-chairman of the APC, to adopt Oshiomhole as the consensus chairmanship candidate of the region.

“We were here for a meeting only to be ambushed by the national vice chairman of the party to adopt a preconceived candidate,” Ikanya said.

“Yesterday (Sunday), we held a meeting which he attended, only for him to come and manipulate, sort out every suggestion and he is trying to say he has come out with a resolution. First, I want us to know that the zonal executive committee does not have the power to elect, nominate or to adopt candidates for national offices.

“It is the national convention that can do that. Secondly, there are very senior members in the zone that were shut out of this meeting purposely. Number one, the national chairman of the party who is from this zone and the national vice chairman of the party ought to sought the permission of the national chairman of the party even to convene this meeting because the constitution states that the national vice chairman shall assist the national chairman.

“So, in this zone where we have a sitting chairman and he is not invited to a meeting, you have six ministers, you have former governors, you have very senior citizens of this zone and they were shut out of the meeting only for the national vice chairman to ambush everybody, ignore every motion that was moved, even when somebody moved a motion that he should disqualify himself having shown bias from the beginning in this meeting, he still sat there and he is saying to the public that there was a resolution.

“We want you to know that out of the states of the zone, four states are saying that this was an ambush, it was not acceptable, there was no resolution. We have said that every person is free to run in the election.

We stand by the resolution of the national executive committee (NEC) that there is waiver. The national chairman can recontest if he wants to recontest, any other person from the zone can recontest if they want to recontest. What has happened in this meeting is a farce, is not binding on anybody, it is null and void.

Four states are saying no, whereas just two states – Edo and some parts of Delta are the people that are saying that they have a resolution. This is not how democracy should be practiced. Arising from this meeting today, the majority view is that there is no consensus on any candidate.”

On his part, Fafi said: “I want to also align myself with my colleagues from other states that they are not aware of what happened here. It is undemocratic, unexpected and a complete fraud and we dissociate ourselves from what has happened here and we believe that the election should be open to any interested candidate from the South South and the people will decide who to vote for and not the decision of Edo state.”

John and Attai also spoke in a similar manner.

The national executive committee (NEC) of the party had extended the tenure of the national working committee (NWC) led by Oyegun by a year but some leaders of the party kicked against it and even headed to the court.

President Muhammadu Buhari who was also in support of the tenure extension later opposed it, insisting on another convention.
The convention is slated for next month
