Obasanjo Vs Buhari: Fayose Reacts To Letter To President Buhari

Just In!! Igbo Language School inaugurated in Frankfurt

In a bold initiative, a group has started a school in Germany to teach an African language to children of African origin in the Diaspora.

Saturday (20 January) witnessed the official opening of the Igbo Language School in Frankfurt. Igbo is the language of the Igbo people, one of Nigeria’s three biggest ethno-national groups.

Attended by members of the Nigerian community, especially of the Igbo ethnicity, the school was flagged off by the Consul General in charge of the Nigerian consulate in Frankfurt, Mr Dayo Olu Falowo.

The top diplomat, who was represented by Mrs Folasade Sobande, expressed his joy at the opening of the Igbo Language School because of the great importance of preserving Nigerian and African languages. He wished the school success and offered every support the Nigerian diplomatic mission in Germany could give to what, he described, as “this noble initiative”.

In his keynote speech, Engr Stanley Okoli, Chairman of the Christian Igbo Professional Network (CIPN) – the organisation that established the school, spoke about the importance of transferring the Igbo language to the next generation. He lamented that many people no longer spoke pure Igbo or pure African languages, but often mixed them with a European language. He explained that once a people lost their language, they ceased to exist as a cultural group.

Special recognition was given to Mrs Chinyere Ogamba at the event for her promotion of Igbo language in Germany. Ogamba already gives Igbo lessons to a small group of children at her home in Essen.

The event featured the inauguration of the first class of the Igbo language school Frankfurt and the introduction of the teacher, Rev Sister Stelphin Nwachukwu.

The pupils, most of whom are of Igbo origin, received their first lesson at the event.

Speaking with The African Courier, Mr Che Chidi Chukwumerije, Secretary of the CIPN, said the school was open to all children, irrespective of their country of origin, who’re interested in learning Igbo. Chukwumerije hoped that other African groups would emulate his organisation’s efforts and looked forward to partnering with similar initiatives.

The Igbo language, a member of the Volta-Niger branch of the Niger-Congo family of languages, has approximately 24 million speakers in Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea. Igbo is written in the Latin script, which was introduced by British colonialists.

NBA condemns indiscriminate arrests, human rights violations by DSS, threatenes to do this..

The Jos, Plateau State branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) has condemned activities of the Department of State Services (DSS) who arrest people indiscriminately and violate their rights in the process.
It said all Nigerians should be allowed to enjoy their fundamental human rights instead of arresting and harassing them with reckless abandon.
NBA Jos Chairman, Ralph Monye, said this while welcoming members and guests to the 2017/2018 Legal Year, even as he lampooned the DSS operatives for the series of complaints trailing their Sting Operations.
His words: “We believe that we are in a democratic dispensation. A situation where operatives from whichever agency arrest citizens who are merely exercising their fundamental human rights should not only be frowned at but should also be deprecated.
“We urge all the security operatives involved in the violation of human rights of Nigerians to desist forthwith in the best interest of the nation. We believe that nobody or group of persons or agencies can be greater than Nigeria.
“If arrests must be made, they must be within the confines of the law and there are procedures. This is what we lawyers demand.”
While sympathising with Benue State and other parts of the country for the gruesome attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen, Monye said the NBA Jos joined their branches, especially Benue to condemn the senseless killings.

How businessman imported illegal firearms for six years – DSS

One of the men who illegally imported 661 pump action guns in January 2017 had been smuggling guns into the country since 2012, according to Department of State Services (DSS).
Wale Odu, Head of Investigation of DSS, disclosed this on Monday while giving evidence in the trial of five accused persons, charged before Justice Ayotunde Faji of the Federal High Court in Lagos.
The five persons are standing trial over the unlawful importation of 661 pump action guns into the country.
The Nigeria Customs Service had on June 14, 2017, arraigned two Customs Officers, Muhmud Hassan, and Salisu Abdulahi Danjuma, alongside Oscar Okafor, Donatus Ezebunwa Achinulo, and Matthew Okoye, before Justice Ayotunde Faji’s court on charges bordering on illegal importation of firearms, conspiracy, forgery and altering of documents, offering of graft to government officials and importation of prohibited goods.

Narrating his interactions with each of the accused persons, the Head of DSS investigation said: “On February 2017, DSS took over the case of illegal importation of firearms from the Nigeria Customs Services.
“While taking over the case, the two defendants, Hassan Mahmud and Okafor Oscar, also known as Okafor Osita, were handed over to DSS for investigation of illegal importation of 661 pump action rifles.
“Also a container containing the rifles and steel doors.
“Also, a truck with number BDG 265 SD, used in carrying the container, along with the pump action rifles.
“I and my team, which include Saheed Adetunji, Fola Oni, Bolaji Adeyemo, and others.
“I interacted with the second defendant, Hassan Mahmud, who told me that he is a sole director of Hassan Trade Nigeria Limited, which is the consignee and importer of the illegally imported 661 pump action rifles.
“In respect of the container, he and Oscar had several meetings at Southern Sun Hotel, Kingsway Road, Ikoyi, where he agreed to collect N4 million for the clearance of the container.
“And that in one of the meeting, Oscar told him that the container is carrying pump action rifles, which was the reason for charging him N4 million.”
He also told the court that the second accused confessed to him that he paid N1 million to the fourth accused, Danjuma Abdulahi, to ensure the clearance of the container from Apapa Port, without due process.
He further told the court that Hassan Mahmud confessed to him that, being an Assistant Comptroller of Customs (ACC), he had illegal ways of shielding the container from 100 percent inspection.
According to him, the second accused told him that after the interception of the container, he called Oscar and told him that some millions would be required to prevent it from being taken to Customs office, so that the content (the pump action rifles) would not be discovered.
He said sequel to the refusal of men of Nigeria Customs to collect the money, the container was taken to where 100 percent investigation was conducted in his presence, and the 661 pump action rifles were discovered.
The witness also disclosed that the second accused confessed to him of bribing men of Customs with N400, 000, which he claimed to have collected from the third accused, Okafor Oscar, which the Customs Officers refused to accept.
On his interaction with the third accused, Okafor Oscar, also known as Okafor Osita, the DSS Head of Investigation said the accused confessed to him that he participated in loading the container in Turkey, with one Okoye Matthew (now at large).
He added that Oscar handed over a falsified bill of lading to Hassan Mahmud for clearance of the container in Nigeria.
The witness also told the court that the accused confessed to him that he had series of meetings with the second accused at Southern Sun Hotel, Ikoyi, on how to handle the container.
He added that he had been doing the business of importation with the second accused for years.

He mentioned the name of Donatus Ezenbuwa Achinulo as a partner in the business of importation of arms, and Matthew Okoye (now at large), as a partner in arms smuggling business from Turkey to Nigeria.
On his interaction with the fourth accused, Danjuma Abdulahi, the witness stated that the accused confessed collecting N1 million from the second accused, Hassan Mahmud, to facilitate the clearance with the examination of the container.
The witness also said the accuses confessed giving two men of the Nigeria Customs Service, who managed the gate of Apapa Seaport, Emmanuel Silas and Abiodun Taiwo, the sum of N100, 000, after telling them that the container had no valid papers.
He said the accused confessed to him that no examination was conducted on the container.

The Head of DSS investigation team also told the court that the sixth accused, Donatus Achinulo, revealed to him that he had been in the business of illegal arms importation since 2012, and confessed that he had been doing the business with the third accused, Okafor Oscar.
According to him, the accused confessed to him that the second accused, Hassan Mahmud, was the person that cleared most of the illegal arms imported into the country.
He said after his interaction with all accused persons, both Hassan Mahmud and Okafor Oscar volunteered to write statements, while Danjuma Abdulahi and Donatus Achinulo, on request, asked Saheed Adetunji and Fola Oni, to take down their statements.
Hassan Mahmud’s lawyer, Yakubu Galadima, raised an objection to the tendering of client’s statement by the prosecution on the ground that the statement was obtained under duress.
Counsel to the other accused, which includes Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), Paul Ananaba (SAN), and Abdulahi, also aligned themselves with Galadima’s submission.
Justice Ayotunde Faji adjourned the matter till Wednesday, January 24, for trial-within-trial, and continuation of trial of accused persons.
In the charge number FHC/L/190c/17, all the accused persons were alleged to have conspired with one another to illegally import into Nigeria 661 pump action rifles.
They were also alleged to have forged the documents which include two bills of lading.

Container laden with military uniforms, weapons disappears from Apapa Port

Lagos—A 14-foot container loaded with military camouflage uniforms and other suspected dangerous weapons has reportedly disappeared from Apapa Port, Lagos.

Already, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos Ports Command, Celestine Okoye, yesterday, directed his detectives to trace the location of the missing container and arrest both the importer and others connected with the importation within 24 hours. The search for the container which came on the heels of wanton killings in the country by suspected herdsmen and kidnappers dressed in military camouflage has placed both the police and customs officials on a collision course after CP Okoye vowed to get to the root of the matter.
Vanguard learned that the container loaded with military camouflage uniforms and other dangerous items passed through the terminal operation at the Port last Friday but all efforts to block it by police detectives acting on intelligence information failed. It was gathered that before the container disappeared from the port, policemen promptly informed the Commissioner of the move and he swiftly gave directives through a letter, that it should not be cleared pending thorough checks. However, according to sources, after receiving the letter, Port officials at the terminal allegedly cleared the container claiming later that they contacted Marine Police before clearing the container. They alleged that the container had already left the Port before they received the letter from Police.

Piqued by this development, CP Okoye, reportedly contacted his counterpart at the Marine, who denied knowledge of the clearance. Based on this development, sources said, the CP directed his men to get all facts relating to the container including the identity of the importer and those involved in its illegal clearance within 24 hours. Vanguard gathered that the police bent on recovering the container, rounded up all those involved in its importation on suspicion that they might be the gang that masterminded the importation of dangerous weapons seized at the Port, not long ago. According to the source: “All the officials at the Port involved in the deal are feeding fat on this and they believe that nobody can stop them from doing this dirty and dangerous business. Their dirty deal is what is contributing to the presence of dangerous weapons including the AK47 being used by herdsmen and deadly kidnappers.”

Fulani herdsmen killings will continue if – Ijaw youths warns

The Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, has said that herdsmen killings across the country will continue until Nigeria is restructured.
IYC spokesman, Henry Iyalla, in a statement on Monday, decried the upsurge in the killing of innocent citizens by herdsmen.
It condemned the massacre in Benue, Adamawa, Southern Kaduna, Taraba, Ondo and Ekiti state and accused the Buhari government of playing politics with human lives.
“It is disheartening to see that while the lives of women and children are lost daily, the Federal Government is busy playing politics with security”, the statement noted.

“The statement by some Northern governors that those calling for restructuring are living in the past and the insensitive statement of the Vice President appointed to chair investigations into herdsmen attack, calling for unity instead of addressing the issues at hand, make it obvious that the Federal Government is paying lip service to the issues of security.
“The unity of Nigeria cannot be achieved when the lives of cows seem more important to the Federal Government than the lives of Nigerian citizens.
“Otherwise, why will the government be focused on taking lands from others to give to herdsmen who are doing their private business?
“We note with dismay that the so-called herdsmen are heavily funded, leaving one in doubt if the funds raised from selling cows can afford them the purchase of such heavy arms.
“Farmlands of notable Nigerians like Chief Olu Falae, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, have been burnt with no arrest made. Obviously some evil elements are financing these killings and the Federal Government is doing nothing to stop them.
“It must be made clear that ranches cannot be seen as being the same as colonies, as stated by the Minister of Agriculture. We want to make it clear that no Ijaw land will be given to anyone to run his private business.”
