Unemployed Graduate Reveals How Agriculture Saved Her From Committing Suicide.

Loading...

An unemployed graduate of University of Abuja, Ms Felicia Ezekiel, said her involvement in agriculture once saved her from committing suicide. Ezekiel, who holds a B.Sc. Accounting degree, said this in an interview with NAN in Abuja on Monday.

She recalled that her involvement in agriculture made her to jettison the evil idea of committing suicide because of frustration induced by her staying at home for three years without a job…

She said: “After graduating and staying at home for three years, while seeking a white-collar job as a graduate of Accounting which wasn’t forthcoming, I became anxious and disenchanted.

“I was almost going mad; I even went to the extreme by attempting suicide until a Good Samaritan, who was into Ugwu (pumpkin) vegetable farming, encouraged me to go into farming.

“I reluctantly went into Ugwu vegetable farming as a last resort because I have exhausted all the available options, as advised by my mother.

“I was motivated to go into agriculture because of President Muhammadu Buhari’s agriculture-driven policies which many citizens embraced and became rich after crop growing and harvests.

“Today, I can tell you that I am a proud Ugwu vegetable farmer; through farming, I have started making money and paying my bills.

“I started by renting a parcel of land for N20,000 annually in Kugbaru, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, and today, I employ over seven persons and have over 40 off-takers,’’ she said.

Ezekiel said Ugwu vegetable farming had given her more that she had bargained for, as she could now count her achievements with joy.

“We have two graduates in the house who are not working, a mother and other siblings, but through Ugwu vegetable farming, I cater for the needs of my entire household.

“It is through Ugwu vegetable cultivation that I pay my house rent and let me shock you; I am currently building a house, which is already at the roofing stage. I am paying the school fees of my younger ones and taking care of my aged mother; through Ugwu vegetable farming, I am able to take care of my family.

“I am planning to engage in the cultivation of other crops like beans, maize and yam during this rainy season but Ugwu vegetable farming will remain my main business.

“My advice for those youths waiting for white-collar jobs is for them to embrace farming because the Buhari-administration is promoting the interests of farmers, including the youth,’’ she said.

JUST IN!!! Quit Notice: Fulani Herdsmen Disown Arewa Youth, Beg IPOB

The South-East leadership of cattle breeders under the aegis of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has dissociated itself from the recent quit notice given to Igbos in the north by the Arewa youths.

They also appealed to IPOB to  sheath their swords and give Nigeria another chance.

The group’s chairman, Alhaji Siddiki Gidado, in a statement in Awka, Anambra state on Wednesday demanded that those behind such act should be brought to book.

The group said although they were not comfortable with the agitations of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and MASSOB, it does not support call for a quit notice to Ndigbo.

The statement reads: “We condemn in its entirety the aspect of the Arewa Youths communiqué that insists that Igbos should leave North; this position is unacceptable to us in the South-east because we feel at home in this zone”.

“It is worrisome that some people who are safely seated in their comfort zones seem to care less about the safety of many of their kiths and kin at the other sides of the divide as they make statements or engage in acts that can cause mayhem”

“We advice that both Arewa group and Biafra agitators should sheath their swords and seek better ways of making Nigeria a better place for all of us.”

The group said that unity of the country should be paramount to everybody than the divisive calls, adding that South-east governors had been at the forefront of such unity in the country.

Meanwhile, the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has lambasted the leader of Biafra Independent Movement (BIM), Chief Raph Uwazuruike for visiting the Arewa youths in Kaduna.

In a statement signed by the MASSOB leader, Uchenna Madu, in Onitsha today, it alleged that Arewa youths are using Uwazuruike to cause confusion among Ndigbo.

BREAKING!!! Fulani Herdsmen With Arms Storm State Assembly Over Grazing Bill

MEMBERS of Taraba State chapter of Miyeti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, clad with arms, yesterday, took its protest against the state’s Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranchers Establishment Bill 2017 to the House of Assembly, threatening breakdown of law if the bill is passed.

The anti-open grazing bill was sponsored as an executive bill to the state House of Assembly by Governor Darius Ishaku about a month ago.

The speech of the state’s Chairman of Miyeti Allah, Sahabi Tukur, was read by Alhaji Adamu Azo at the gate of the Taraba State House of Assembly before the Speaker, Peter Diah, and other members of House.

The association described the bill as a move targeted to subdue the Fulani tribe and also to undermine and restrict activities of the Fulani tribe in the state.

The group called on the lawmakers to stop the bill in the collective interest of the people of the state. It also threatened that there would be a breakdown of law and order, should the House pass the bill into law.

While addressing newsmen, the Speaker, Diah, condemned the threats by the Chairman of Miyeti Allah, noting that the association was protesting in ignorance since the issues raised during the protest were accommodated within the proposed bill.

He said the committee set up by the House of Assembly to handle the process of the bill had given three weeks within which to conduct public hearing on the bill before passage, where all issues that appear unclear will be addressed.

He called on Miyeti Allah to compile all areas they are not comfortable with as a memorandum for the public hearing, stressing that the Assembly had given room for groups and individuals to attend the public hearing with their lawyers.

He described the protest as a deliberate move by Miyeti Allah to cause public disorder in the state capital, as the group did not follow due process, which was the reason security did not allow them access into the assembly complex.

He said: “How can you mobilise for protest and you allow your members to carry arms? The Assembly is an organised place and the security will not allow disorder.

“I think that was why they were not allowed access into the complex, but as
