123 Jigawa Men Sue Lagos Government For N1bn Over Detention

The Lagos state government has been dragged to court by the 123 indigenes of Jigawa state detained over the weekend by operatives of the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences (Enforcement Unit).

The detained men led by one Abdullahi Yakubu filed their lawsuit before a Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday September 2, demanding N1bn reparation from the state government for profiling and detaining them.

Other respondents in the lawsuit marked FHC/L/CS/1519/19 include the Lagos State Commissioner of Police and the Chairman of the task force, Mr. Yinka Egbeyemi as well as the Attorney-General of Lagos State.

Asides asking the court to award them N1bn as damages over an alleged restriction of their movement by the Lagos State Government, the detained men also asked the court to mandate the respondents to release their seized motorcycles numbering 48, the truck conveying them, their wears and other goods belonging to them in custody.
