Senator Elisha Abbo has missed the beginning of his trial at the Zuba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abuja. At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, police prosecutor, James Idachaba, told the court that the defendant was not in court.
Mr Idachaba told the court that he was ready to open his case against the defendant and all his witnesses were in court, Igbere TV reports.
However, Abbo’s counsel, Adegbite Adeniyi, said his client was suffering from Acute Febrile (a medical term used to describe a sudden fever or elevation in body temperature).
Mr Adeniyi, presenting the medical report to the court, added that Abbo was hospitalised in Yola, Adamawa State.
Abbo appeared in a viral video early July assaulting a nursing mother who tried to defend an attendant, Bibra Warmate, at a sex toy shop in Abuja.
The prosecution alleged that he slapped the complainant severally on her face and forcefully dragging her shirt without provocation.
The lawmaker’s counsel prayed the court to grant him an adjournment which the prosecution agreed to.
Magistrate Abdullahi Ilelah adjourned the case until September 24 for hearing.
