A renowned Nigerian philanthropist and business mogul, Emeka Ikwechegh has awarded free scholarship to over 180 indigent students in Abia State.
Igbere TV reports that the philanthropic gesture cut across Igbere Community, Bende Local Government Area in Abia North senatorial district.
Our correspondent who monitored the event reports that both primary and secondary school students whose parents could not afford to pay their tuition fee were captured in the exercise.
The 180 awardees were drawn from Better Foundation Academy, Brain Class Academy, Igbere Secondary School, Central Primary School, Excel Model Academy, Real Land International Academy, Onu Ibina Primary School, amongst others.
Speaking with Igbere TV in Umuahia, on Wednesday, Emeka Ikwechegh said he was moved to see intelligent children sent out of school because their parents were financially handicapped.
Ikwechegh told our correspondent that, having lost both parents at 4, he knows what it is like having no parent to cater for one’s needs.
He said the scholarships were awarded to over 180 students in Igbere, who are doing well academically.
“It always sadden my heart each time I see children who are intelligent but can’t go to school because their parents don’t have the money to do so.
“I also know that some of them are from a single parent, while some may have lost both parents. So I know the pains their guardian go through trying to send them to school.
“This is why I have decided to give scholarship to children in Abia State in order to encourage them to study hard and take charge of their future.
“Remember, education is the key to success. And no nation will thrive or move forward without education. By the special grace of God, we will have more students integrated into this scheme in the coming years”, Emeka Ikwechegh added.
Igbere TV recalls that Emeka Ikwechegh had recently declared a monthly salary scheme for widows in Igbere, Bende Local Government Area of Abia State.
He also promised to build and equip an ultramodern healthcare centre to cater for the health needs of the community and others.
