BREAKING: Reps Members In Free-for-all Over Leadership Position

Plenary at the Federal House of Representatives turned rowdy on Wednesday, July 3, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV gathered that the rowdy session ensued over the declaration of who becomes the lower chamber’s minority leader.

The rowdy session followed the Speaker’s decision to abandon a letter by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) nominating Kingsley Chinda as Minority Leader.

Igbere TV reports that the PDP is the largest minority party in the House.

The speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, went ahead to announce Ndidi Elumelu as Minority Leader which culminated in a protest by members of the main opposition PDP.

Elumelu is also a member of the PDP.

Our National Assembly correspondent reports that a member of the PDP, Kingsley Chinda, however, raised a point of order but the Speaker ruled him out of order.

The development turned the session into rowdiness, with several PDP lawmakers protesting against the announcement.

Igbere TV gathered that the matter got complicated when an unidentified lawmaker tried to grab the mace of the lower chamber.

The sergeants-at-arms had to move to protect the mace while Gbajabiamila, in the heat of the controversy, adjourned the plenary.

He was guarded out of the chamber amid cheers and jeers.
