National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has denied media reports suggesting that the party has zoned the position of Deputy Senate President to the South-South.
IGBERE TV reports that the APC Chairman said the party was yet to zone Senate key offices, including the office of Deputy Senate President.
Oshiomhole also denied reports that he was planning to zone the position of Deputy Senate President to his Edo North Senatorial district.
The APC Chairman, who spoke through his media aide, Simon Egbebulem, said, “Nothing has been done. Nobody has said this is the person for that position. But the party is working on how to share the position so that every part of the country will have a sense of belonging.
“They have started the process and the party is backing Gbajabiamila and Ahmed Lawan for the position of Speaker and Senate president but other positions, the party is still working to sort out these positions”.
IGBERE TV reports that the battle for the Deputy Senate Presidency seat has thrown up high-level lobby amongst the three regions — South-East, South-West and South-South — jostling for the position.
Top contenders for the office are Senators Orji Uzor Kalu, Francis Alimekhena, Robert Ajayi Boroffice, Oluremi Tinubu, and Ovie Omo-Agege.
Orji Kalu, a former member of the House of Representatives, is qualified to contest the position according to the ‘ranking’ rule.
He was the Deputy Chairman of the Finance and Internal Affairs Committees, and Chief Sponsor of the famous Dual-Citizenship Rights Bill.
IGBERE TV recalls that the former Abia State Governor and National Co-ordinator, National Movement For the Re-election of Buhari (NMFRB), had been endorsed by various interest groups and individuals including former Governor of Anambra and Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige.
