Benjamin Kalu has described as reversal of 25 years injustice done the widely acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 election.
In a message to congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari for approving as new democracy day June 12, the Bende Federal Constituency aspirant also said this move by president Buhari will assuage the hearts of those who lost their beloved ones as a result of the pogroms birthed by the annulment of the election.
The message reads; “June 12, 1993 is indeed a very remarkable date in the annals of our democratic history as a people. It is a date generally believed to symbolise the day the freest and fairest election was conducted in our land. Sadly, the outcome of that election was swept under the carpet by the then military rulers which truncated the will of the people.
“That President Muhammadu Buhari has reversed this 25 years injustice and posthumously pronounced chief MKO Abiola the winner of that election is not only indicative of the president’s enviable democratic profile but a reason for the soul of the late democratic icon to rest in peace for the country he gave his life for.
“This uncommon stride by president Buhari will also assuage the hearts of those who lost their beloved ones as a result of the pogroms birthed by the annulment of the June 12 election. They are the true martyrs of our democracy.
“What this tells you is that injustice has an expiry date. No matter how long it pervades, posterity has a way of rewriting the history and correcting the wrongs of the past. Today, Nigerians know without any scintila of doubt who won the annulled June 12, 1993 election.
“I congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari for the posthumous honour and recognition. At last Chief MKO and other martyrs of democracy will feel appreciated albeit belatedly by a country they selflessly gave their all for”.
