Robbers have broken into the home of Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué and his partner Shakira, it has been reported. The World Cup winner’s parents were sleeping upstairs at the home in Barcelona when the break-in happened last night.
Colombian singer Shakira, 41, was performing in Cologne, Germany, at the time and Pique, 31, who is preparing for the start of football’s showpiece tournament in Russia, had travelled to the city to be at the concert.
Police say the break-in was ‘non violent’. It is thought luxury watches belonging to the footballer as well as jewellery was stolen from the 700 sq m mansion, which is surrounded by a thousand acres of grounds in Barcelona’s Esplugues de Llobregat.
It is understood the robbers took advantage of storms hitting the area as cover. They got in either through a window or balcony using the so-called ‘silent method’ so as not to disturb the occupants or neighbours.
Piqué’s parents apparently heard nothing and only discovered there had been a burglary when they woke up and alerted the police.
‘These types of criminals usually act very professionally and wear gloves and balaclavas,’ a police spokesman has told the Spanish press. Forensic officers have been on the scene searching for clues.
