Biafra: Again, Nnamdi Kanu Flouts Court Order

NNAMDI Kanu, Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, has again flouted another term of his bail conditions granted to him by the judge presiding over his trial, Binta Nyako.

Mr. Kanu, who is facing charges of treasonable felony at the Federal High Court in Abuja has been at the vanguard of the call for an independent Biafra republic from the Nigerian state.

The bail is the first since the commencement of his trial for alleged treason.

Nyako granting Kanu bail, said he is to produce three sureties with N100 million each.

Nyako ruled that Mr. Kanu must never be seen in a crowd of more than 10 people.

“No interviews and no rallies,” said Mrs. Nyako, threatening to revoke the bail if any of the terms was breached.

On Sunday, Kanu, flouting his bail term, addressed a crowd of supporters – on the occasion of the Shabbat, a Jewish religious programme – numbering more than 10, in his father’s compound in Abia State.

His group, Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, had declared May 30 as sit-at-home protest to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Biafran war, alongside those who lost their lives in the process.

On Tuesday, Kanu, flouted another of his bail conditions by granting Al-Jazeera an interview in his father’s house in Umuahia, the Abia State Capital.

“I don’t care. I can’t go outside to call for a press conference. I can’t go on Biafra Radio to broadcast. I can’t allow large [groups of] people to basically congregate outside to see me…it’s like asking me not to breathe,” he said.

He also hinted on why he is demanding for the secession of Igbos and the entire South-East from Nigeria, citing marginalization.

“I’m not allowed to contest for the presidency of Nigeria because I’m Igbo. I’m not allowed to aspire to become the inspector general of police because I’m Igbo.

“I’m not allowed to become chief of army staff because I’m Igbo. What sort of stupid country is that? Why would any idiot want me to be in that sort of country?” he questioned.
