The Human Rights Defenders (HURIDE), Ebonyi State, has cautioned against what it described as a growing wave of unproven allegations and personal attacks against the state Commissioner of Police, CP Hope Ununuwa Okafor.
In a press statement dated October 16, 2026, and signed by its chairman, Dr Sampson Oko Nweke, the organisation urged members of the public and the media to exercise restraint and avoid presenting unverified claims as established facts.

The allegations reportedly levelled against the police commissioner include claims involving over β¦3 million in bail payments, alleged personal relationships with political figures, administrative transfer issues and purported weekly levies imposed on heads of units and departments within the command.
However, HURIDE stated that, based on information available to the organisation, individuals reportedly questioned over the allegations had not provided convincing evidence to substantiate the claims.
The group emphasised that public officials must remain accountable but insisted that allegations of misconduct should be investigated through lawful procedures, credible evidence, and impartial processes rather than rumours or personal attacks.
It also challenged anyone with verifiable evidence of wrongdoing to present it to the appropriate authorities, warning that the spread of unsubstantiated claims could damage reputations and undermine public confidence in institutions.
HURIDE further clarified that its position does not support impunity or shield public officers from legitimate scrutiny.
Instead, it maintained that every individual deserves a fair hearing and the presumption of innocence until allegations are established.
The organisation called on the public to allow evidence, rather than speculation or political hostility, to determine the truth.
