A group of final-year nursing students at Madonna University, Elele Campus in Rivers State, recently found themselves at the centre of a storm that has left one of them expelled and fourteen others suspended.

The trouble began when the students joined a trending “Gen Z nurses” TikTok challenge. Dressed in their clinical uniforms, they filmed themselves dancing in different parts of the university’s teaching hospital — on the staircase, in the waiting area, and other clinical spaces. The video carried a playful Pidgin caption that roughly translated to “No fall sick o, na Gen Z full hospital now.” What started as light-hearted content quickly went viral and drew the attention of the school authorities.
Madonna University, a faith-based institution known for its strict standards, viewed the video as unprofessional and a serious breach of conduct expected of nursing students training in a clinical environment. Disciplinary action followed. One student, identified as Mercy, who featured prominently at the beginning of the clip, received an expulsion letter. The remaining fourteen were suspended.
In a recent emotional video now circulating online, one of the affected students breaks down in tears as she appeals for a second chance. Visibly distressed, she speaks of the overwhelming pain of the expulsion and the years of sleepless nights, sacrifices, and hard work that now feel wasted. “How do I explain this to my mother?” she asks, her voice heavy with emotion. She repeatedly pleads for mercy, begging that their mistake should not permanently erase everything they have worked for.
The video has deepened the public conversation. While some believe the school was right to protect the image of the nursing profession, many others feel the punishment — especially full expulsion so close to graduation — is too severe for a social media misstep.
Whatever the final outcome, the episode has left a group of young students facing an uncertain future, and one young woman still asking for the chance to make things right.
