WhatsApp to Begin Charging Nigerians N14 Per Message, Sets Date

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, will start charging businesses for certain messages sent through the WhatsApp Business Platform from October 1, 2026, in a move that could increase communication costs for banks, fintechs, retailers, and other companies that rely on the service.

The new pricing will apply to businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform, formerly known as the WhatsApp Business API, rather than individuals or small businesses using the standard WhatsApp Business app on their phones .

Currently, when a customer messages a business, a 24-hour customer service window opens. Businesses can respond with free-form service messages during that period. From October 1, Meta will charge businesses on a per-message basis for those service messages, as well as for qualifying utility messages sent within that window .

How Much Businesses Will Pay

For businesses in Nigeria, a chargeable utility-type message, such as a payment confirmation or order update, will cost about $0.0101, or roughly N14, based on the exchange rate .

Marketing messages will cost considerably more, at about $0.062, or approximately N84 per message .

The charges could become significant for companies that handle large volumes of customer interactions.

For instance, a Nigerian fintech sending 500,000 chargeable messages at $0.0101 per message could incur about **$5,050** in Meta messaging fees alone. Additional charges from business solution providers or software platforms may also apply .

Businesses Most Affected

Banks, fintechs, e-commerce platforms, telecommunications operators, logistics firms, and large retailers that use the WhatsApp Business Platform for customer service and transaction-related communication are among those that will be affected .

For small businesses and startups where WhatsApp serves as both a customer service channel and a sales platform, the cost could be particularly significant.

Deadline for Compliance

Meta has warned businesses and Solution Providers to ensure they have a valid payment method on file before the new charges take effect.

“For any Solution Provider or directly-integrated businesses that does not have a payment method on file by September 30, 2026, Meta will stop delivering service messages as of when they become charged on October 1, 2026,” Meta said in its developer documentation .

Background to the Change

Meta has been moving towards a per-message pricing structure since July 2025, when it replaced its previous conversation-based pricing model for business-initiated template messages . The October 2026 change will extend that approach by removing some of the free treatment for service and utility messages .
