Railway: NRC Grants Permanent Operating Licence To Lagos State

Until now, the NRC had been the sole operator of railway services in Nigeria. This licence marks a major shift, giving Lagos the authority to operate its rail services under an approved track-sharing agreement.

The immediate impact? The Lagos Red Line will increase its daily train trips from 9 to 24 before the end of 2026, making commuting faster and more convenient for thousands of residents.

More train trips mean shorter waiting times, less pressure on the roads, and a more reliable public transport system for Lagosians.

Beyond the Red Line, the licence also covers future rail projects, giving Lagos greater flexibility to expand its rail network as the city continues to grow.

This is a major step towards modernising public transportation, reducing traffic congestion, and strengthening state participation in infrastructure development.

A win for Lagos. A positive step for Nigeria’s rail sector. More competition, better services, and improved mobility can only benefit the people.
