Nigerian billionaire businessman and philanthropist, Tony Elumelu, has stirred widespread debate after openly attributing part of his success story to luck rather than hard work alone.
Elumelu, who is the Chairman of Heirs Holdings and founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, made the remark during a recent interview with popular YouTube creator Korty EO, where he reflected on his journey through banking, entrepreneurship, and investment leadership across Africa.

According to him, while discipline, consistency, and hard work played a role in his rise, success cannot be explained by effort alone, as external factors beyond human control also shape outcomes.
“I am here because of luck. At times, you don’t get successful because you are the best in class or because you are the fittest or most energetic. Sometimes, you need luck and I am a product of luck,” Elumelu stated.
He, however, cautioned young entrepreneurs not to misinterpret his statement as an excuse for complacency, stressing that determination, resilience, and strong work ethics remain essential ingredients for success in any field.
The comment has triggered mixed reactions across social media, with many Nigerians divided between those who agree that timing and opportunity play a major role in success, and others who argue that Elumelu’s decades of strategic decisions, risk taking, and corporate experience cannot simply be reduced to luck.
Tony Elumelu remains one of Africa’s most influential business figures, known for his role in transforming United Bank for Africa and his continued investments in youth entrepreneurship across the continent through his foundation.
The debate continues online as Nigerians question the balance between hard work, opportunity, and chance in achieving extraordinary success.
