Dangote Petroleum Refinery Recalls 800 Redeployed Engineers, Grants Conditional Pardon
The management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery has approved a “conditional pardon” for hundreds of engineers previously redeployed across its business units following disciplinary actions linked to internal operational disruptions.
In an internal memo issued on Thursday, April 30, 2026, the company announced a strategic shift in its disciplinary approach, signalling a move to consolidate technical expertise at Africa’s largest single-train refinery.
The recall comes approximately six months after the refinery management, in October 2025, moved against roughly 800 engineers following internal disruptions that threatened the stability of the multi-billion-dollar facility.
While some were sacked and later redeployed to other subsidiaries—including units outside Nigeria—the new directive opens the door for their return to the core refinery operations.
The memo, signed by the Group Vice President, Oil & Gas, Devakumar Edwin, revealed that the decision to reinstate the technical staff followed an extensive internal review and a series of appeals from stakeholders and the affected engineers themselves.
“This decision was not an easy one. It reflects not only our belief in second chances but also serves as a clear reminder that loyalty, professionalism and adherence to organisational standards are non-negotiable,” the memo stated.
Edwin noted that the recall includes engineers who had accepted redeployment to other companies within the Dangote Group and those who had initially declined such offers.
Despite the pardon, the management issued a stern warning, stressing that the move should not be misinterpreted as leniency. The company reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on any actions capable of undermining the refinery’s operations, which are critical to Nigeria’s energy security.
“Effective immediately, all engineers previously redeployed to other business units will be invited for a meeting and, subsequently, will be provided with an opportunity to render their services at our Petroleum Refinery,” the company noted, while warning that any recurrence of misconduct would attract “immediate sanctions.”
The recall is seen by industry observers as a strategic recalibration to bolster the refinery’s technical workforce as it faces mounting pressure to meet local demand and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products.
Management emphasized that it expects the returning engineers to demonstrate “renewed dedication” and a commitment to operational efficiency.
“We welcome our colleagues back… and we look forward to working together to strengthen our operations and deliver excellence in the oil and gas sector,” the statement concluded.
The Dangote Refinery remains under the spotlight as a pivotal investment for the continent, and the decision to bring back its core technical staff suggests a priority on stabilizing production at the massive Lekki-based facility.
