Atiku Reacts As Thugs Burn Down ADC Office, Block Amaechi’s Motorcade In Rivers

Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the activities of suspected political thugs against the African Democratic Congress, ADC in Rivers State.

DAILY POST reports that gunmen invaded the ADC office in Ubima Ward, Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state on Friday and set the facility on fire.

Shortly after the incident, former governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi, who was on his way to the ward for the ongoing African Democratic Congress, ADC, revalidation exercise, was blocked from gaining access to his community.

According to reports, his convoy was intercepted along the route by the armed men, preventing him from proceeding to the venue.

Reacting, Atiku in a statement on Friday night, condemned attacks on the opposition leaders, calling for thorough investigation into the Friday incident in Rivers State.

The statement reads, “The attack on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) office in Ubima, Ikwere Local Government Area of Rivers State, is condemned.

“It is a dangerous development that efforts to weaken the opposition have now shifted to attacking its members and destroying its properties.

“These are not merely attacks on the opposition coalition ADC, but an assault on our democracy.

The protection of the lives and properties of the opposition must, as a priority, be guaranteed by the Tinubu-led APC administration. That is the minimum expectation of Nigerians.

“We call for an independent investigation into the torching of the ADC secretariat in Rivers to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted in accordance with the law. Failure to do so may encourage others to inflict further violence on the lives and properties of the opposition.

Meanwhile, we are still awaiting the outcome of the investigation into the attack on Mr. Peter Obi and other ADC leaders last week in Benin, Edo State.”
