In a dramatic political move that is set to reshape the landscape of Abia politics ahead of 2027, Hon. Alex Ifeanyi Mascot Ikwechegh, the member representing Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has officially resigned his membership from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The resignation was contained in a letter submitted to his ward chairman in Eziama Ward 1, Aba North Local Government Area, on Saturday morning. In the letter, Ikwechegh thanked the party for the opportunity to serve and wished them success in their future endeavors.
This development comes just days after all local government executives and ward officials resigned en masse from APGA in Aba North and Aba South. That mass defection, reported earlier, effectively dismantled the party’s grassroots structure in the commercial hub of Abia State.
Sources close to the lawmaker suggest that his departure from APGA had been anticipated following the mass resignation of his loyalists, which many political observers interpreted as a clear signal of an impending realignment.
Despite the political turbulence, Ikwechegh has maintained an active legislative profile. He serves as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Poverty Elimination and sits on strategic committees including Anti-Corruption, Navy, NASENI, and Agricultural Institutions.
Just last week, he threw his weight behind real-time electronic transmission of election results, arguing that “reliance on manual collation leaves room for manipulation and could undermine democratic progress.” He declared at the time: “I am for electronic transmission, real-time collation. This is 2026. We are no longer in 1945. We should embrace growth and progress.”
The immediate question following Ikwechegh’s resignation is his next political destination. Political analysts have speculated that he may be positioning to support Abia State Governor Alex Otti, whom Ikwechegh has publicly praised in the past, describing his performance as “magical.”
However, other credible sources suggest that “Onyeocha na Aba,” as the popular politician is fondly called, is being wooed by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and a move to the ruling party may be imminent. Sources reveal that he recently held a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, after which he announced his resignation from APGA, fueling speculation that a formal defection to the APC is underway.
When asked about the 2027 elections in a recent interview, Ikwechegh had stated: “If my people in Aba say they want me to continue providing quality representation and dividends of democracy, why not? I am very much willing to offer my services as the chief servant of the people of Aba.”
All eyes are now on Ikwechegh’s next move, with political observers expecting a formal announcement of his new party allegiance in the coming days. His resignation leaves APGA without its sitting federal lawmaker in Aba North and Aba South, compounding the organizational vacuum created by the earlier mass defection of grassroots executives.
Attempts to reach APGA leadership for comment on Ikwechegh’s resignation were unsuccessful as of press time.
