VDM Slams Wizkid Over Kuti Feud: What Do You Know About Music?

Controversial social commentator Very Dark Man (VDM) has reignited debates in the Nigerian music industry after releasing a viral video condemning perceived disrespect towards the country’s music legends. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

In the video released on Thursday, VDM argued that Nigerians consistently undervalue and insult their music icons, unlike other countries that celebrate the contributions of veteran artists.

“People you are supposed to idolise and respect are called ‘past glory’ in this country,” he said, citing notable names such as Eldee the Don, African China, Plantation Boiz, Psquare, Remedies, Tony Tetuila, Jazzman Olofin, 9ice, Vector, Sasha P, Asa, Weird MC, 2Face Idibia, and Blackface.

VDM’s remarks were prompted by the ongoing feud between Wizkid and members of the Kuti family, particularly Seun Kuti. He condemned Wizkid’s controversial social media post directed at Seun, claiming that it had emboldened fans to insult the legacy of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

“Disagreements are normal, but Wizkid should have addressed the matter without making comments that opened the door for attacks on Fela’s legacy,” VDM said.

He also debunked claims that Wizkid’s Grammy win places him above Fela Kuti, noting that Wizkid won a Grammy in 2021 as a featured artist on Beyoncé’s Brown Skin Girl, not for a solo work. In contrast, he praised Fela’s global recognition, including the induction of Zombie into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2025, and confirmed that Fela is set to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award.

VDM highlighted other Nigerian artists like Burna Boy and Tems, arguing that their Grammy wins were more reflective of individual artistic merit:

Burna Boy – Best Global Music Album for Twice As Tall

Tems – Grammy awards for solo achievements

He insisted that Wizkid, musically and artistically, has not surpassed Fela Kuti or other Kuti family members, including Seun, Femi, and Made Kuti.

“Wizkid has made his mark, but he cannot be compared to Fela or the Kuti lineage. Music is more than awards; it is a legacy,” VDM said.

VDM also defended Fela against criticisms of his personal life, including his multiple marriages. He questioned why historical figures like King Solomon are revered despite similar controversies, while Fela’s character is often judged harshly.

“Fela’s influence transcends his personal life. To judge him on the same terms as ordinary people is unfair,” he added.
