South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has strongly condemned an off-camera incident involving Nigeria’s coach Éric Sékou Chelle during a heated World Cup qualifier against DR Congo.

McKenzie described the behaviour as “totally unacceptable” and called for punishment, saying it brings the game into disrepute.
The drama unfolded just before a crucial penalty kick, where Chelle was seen picking up a water bottle, seemingly aiming it at a member of the DR Congo technical team.
This has sparked widespread debate in African football circles, with the match commissioner set to include it in his report, potentially leading to sanctions.
As tensions rise in international matches, McKenzie’s remarks highlight the need for discipline on the field, especially as South Africa prepares for its own AFCON campaign.
The altercation occurred during a high-stakes World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and DR Congo, adding fuel to an already intense rivalry.
Video footage captured Chelle’s aggressive actions moments before the final penalty, raising concerns about sportsmanship in African football.
“This is totally unacceptable behaviour, we will be looking very closely at this matter, this type of behaviour brings the game in disrepute. Nigeria should be punished for this unbecoming behaviour. This is football not UFC,” said McKenzie.
