By Saeed Tijjani

The Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (OUK), has highlighted his legislative efforts at the National Assembly, specifically the sponsorship of a critical bill aimed at establishing a comprehensive social welfare system in Nigeria.

Senator Kalu, a former Governor of Abia State, confirmed in a terse statement obtained by 9japarrot media that he has sponsored the Social Welfare Service Bill, 2025 (SB. 40), as part of his core mandate of law-making for his constituents and the nation.

Senator Kalu emphasized the crucial importance of the bill, noting that its primary objective is to tackle one of the nation’s most persistent challenges: extreme poverty.

“This all important bill seeks to establish the social welfare service to reduce extreme poverty among vulnerable groups and implement social protection systems and measures in Nigeria and other related matters,” He stated.

The lawmaker reiterated his commitment to his primary responsibilities as a legislator, which he listed as law-making, representation (constituency services), oversight functions, budgeting, and engagement, all geared towards the welfare of Abia North Senatorial District.

The bill is currently before the Senate and is expected to undergo legislative scrutiny as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s social safety nets.
